Roatan – West End to East End

We have been so couped up on the boat! We spend all our time looking at the weather forecast and trying to to figure out when we can get the trampoline repairs done. The repair requires some fiberglass work which needs a little drying time after being done. The work has been going super slow.

We finally had a couple of days without rain last weekend. Randall spent two dry morning coating on the fiberglass. Then, we jumped in the rental car to see the island.

First, we drove over to the West End for cinnamon rolls at Sandy Buns. After our sugar fix, we walked along the length of West Bay, checking out the tourist shops and restaurants. We didn’t buy much but I got some porch decorating ideas from the Roatan Chocolate Factory. They have the coolest porch with lots of island vibe. I grabbed a bar stool and worked on a little drawing of the restaurant out on the water.

Next, we headed to Roatan Brewing Company for tacos and craft beer. It is such a pleasant place set back in the trees. Randall gave the jalapeno gose a thumbs up.

On Saturday, we set out to see the East end. Our first stop was the Sloth Hangout. The sloths get all the glory in the signage but monkey and parrots are there for holding too. Well you can’t really hold a monkey. You can only hope to survive a monkey inspection. They are always looking for something to steal. Sunglasses, hats, keys. Yes if they get your keys, you may be hanging out for hours.

We knew we wanted to take Jake and Michelle to La Sirena. The road to La Sirena is crazy: narrow, potholes and lots of slow moving trucks. After eating, we drove down to Oak Ridge, another small town right on the water. I didn’t think it would be possible to find even worse roads but here the road was super narrow. We circled around the towns one street always worried about meeting oncoming traffic. There is probably some local agreement on which way to travel the narrow road but, if so, it was a locally help secret.

Back at Fantasy island, we are enjoying nightly happy hour with the other cruisers. So far, there aren’t many boats here but it usually gets busier after Christmas. The hotel is getting pretty busy so it is fun to go meet people there. Today, we played volleyball with these guys who were here on the island working on a Christmas video at my favorite store – Megapaca!! We let them know that I am a fan of Megapaca and Michelle is a fan of Christmas!!

I can see you doing the front porch art in your eaves at base camp. It would go nicely with the hammock some day..
it looks like a great island to spend some time on.
