“Thank goodness we live in a world with Octobers.”
I saw this sentence on a red-leaf adorned Facebook photo and thought how nicely worded it was. I shall never utter the words “I like fall” again. We have been in- and out-of-doors all week playing and talking. We love having Michelle here and Mom and Dad are enjoying her company, too.
We got Lily off to school yesterday and headed straight to the Buffalo Creek Lodge for some fishing. The pond was gorgeous in the soft early morning light. I walked around taking pictures. The sumac has turned bright red and every tree was perfectly reflected in the pond’s still water. We launched the paddle boat and skimmed around looking at the moss below the surface. We finally gave up on the fishing and went back to mom and dad’s to saddle Kitty. I have been leading Kitty around some but had not yet saddled her up. Randall and I took about fifteen minutes fiddling around with the bit. I was trying to put the bit in backwards. It is such an embarrassment that I don’t know more about riding. My Dad spoiled me by always saddling the horse for me the few times I went riding. Kitty was surprisingly patient. Well we had a pretty tight hand on the lead rope while we tried to sort everything out. We got the saddle on a little more quickly and then it was time to get on.
Kitty is still Miss Jumpy so there was lots of “Whoa now, Whoa girl” as I swung up. We did a few slow circles in the pen and she danced around a little every time I got too close to humans or to the gate. However, she seemed to get a little better as we went. Randall go on and rode a while, too. Then Michelle took a turn. We had been riding in the pen in front of the dairy barn. Michelle got on Kitty and rode right out of the enclosure into the open pasture. We are watching, trying to figure out why she is thinking Kitty is ready for a trail ride into open pasture. Michelle calls out that Kitty is calling the shots about where to go. Michelle is trying to turn back into the enclosure but Kitty is not for this plan. They get halfway across the field and we watch Kitty start spinning around and Michelle goes down. We start heading her way but she is already up and leading Kitty back to the pen. She claims to be ok, just sore. I get on and Kitty goes into spin mode with me too and the reins break off the bit as I try to stay on. Dad says Kitty need lots of wet saddle blankets. I was trying to figure out why we should wet the saddle blank when it dawned on me that this means lots of sweaty rides. I don’t think Kitty broke much of a sweat with three riders so this is going to be quite a challenge.
We took a little break until Lily got of the school bus at 3:30. Then we rode the ATV’s back to the lodge and Randall followed in the truck with guns and an ice chest full of beer. Hmm. I know it sounds like trouble in the making. However, we saved most of the beer for after the shooting session. We lit a bonfire for the last round of the day. Then, after dark, we rode the ATV’s back home under a full moon peeping from behind some clouds. As we got ready for bed, thunder and lightening started kicking around in the north. We dropped off to sleep listening to rain fall on the metal roof. Better than a lullaby.
