We had boat guests on Friday. It was great fun to catch up with our Kiwi friend Peter Nielsen and meet his girlfriend, Jo. We had tacos and Cuba Libres in our cockpit and caught up on news about mutual sailing friends.

We met Peter (above) at Roatan last year. The Roatan happy hour was always an evening of great sea stories. Peter has a much requested tale he probably gets tired of retelling but always generously recounts for any new sailors who have not heard it. The story is about a Pacific crossing going badly. A whale was hit. Catastrophic boat damage was taken. The SOS call went out and the resulting rescue by Chinese fishing boat goes on to be another interesting piece of the story with the captain being unwilling to shorten the fishing trip to deliver them to land. Peter writes for several magazines so if you are curious how Peter finally got to land, you can read his story at: https://www.yachtingworld.com/features/sperm-whale-collision-sank-yacht-pacific-rescue-128789

I am very frustrated at my lack of photography this week. I didn’t get a single pic of us with Peter and Jo. I also intended to get a quick pic of Randall and I kitted out in our scuba gear. We dove down to scrub of the boat bottom and check zincs yesterday. But of course, once the gear was loaded on our backs, my phone was out of reach.

I am much more consistent with my drawing. I am still happily doing a drawing every day. We went to catch live music last night at Ballyhoo Restaurant. The stage was set up right on the beach with the sun dropping down over the water in the background. Cory Cross, a North Texas musician, was playing.

I hurriedly sketched Cory, a guitarist and a few of the surrounding tables of people. It was hard to capture with all the movement, detail and dying light. But I am happy to keep trying these little sketches. Cory was a little hard to hear. Live music seems to be either ear damaging load or too low to understand. The sound guy kept running around and making adjustments. It was a great crowd, seemed very into the music, and the food looked phenomenal.

We had ceviche on the boat so we were just having drinks but the kitchen was turning out some very carefully designed seafood. Maybe someday I’ll order their lobster and get a picture and a sketch. 2 for 1 deal.

This was my picture perfect drawing spot several days ago. It is nice to have your feet in the pool while you draw. I also attempted to draw Casa Rosalinda, the colorful building below. It didn’t move, which was nice, but was still hard to get with all the different angles.

Anyway, I’ll try to do better on photos, especially of cool people we meet here! We got a chance to get to know boat neighbors this week at an El Milagro fish dinner. We met Liz and Harry on Sailmates and got to hear how Matt from Caribbean Star proposed to his girlfriend, Amber, at Point Sur earlier that day. Mark, a hotel guest, wove angel fish out of palm fronds for guests. These encounters make this journey amazing, more so than the scenery, so I will try to keep my phone handy so you can put faces with the stories.
