Walking All Over San Miguel

We are getting miles of walking in everyday. Five to six miles each morning and another shorter walk in the evening. There is a nice bus system in town with four lines spreading out through town. But we really want to stroll, take pictures and see the views.

Not every church is huge. But every church still manages to be amazing whatever the size.

Yesterday, we headed up to the Mirador which is a spot higher up the mountain overlooking the city. The incline was challenging especially because the well-worn stone walkway can be slick.

You can see the Parroquia in the center of the pic.
Another peek at the Parroquia down this street.

On the way down, we took a super narrow street which had a sign at the beginning “compact cars only.” About a mile down the road, the narrow road got narrower and Randall pointed out the scars on both side walls where traffic had scraped through.

Many houses are multi level with interesting balconies.
Frida is everywhere we go. This painting was cool because her jewelry was made of embedded stones. I think she would approve.
Me admiring Frida.

The outskirts of town were much quieter than the city center but still had beautiful buildings, shops and restaurants on every street.

Mexican art is not only colorful but also seems often very playful. It feels like in Mexico you don’t have to be an artist to create. You can also be just having fun.

These huge figures are called “mojiganges.” A person can fit inside and they are popular at weddings and events.

We sat at this street junction for about an hour so I could draw. So many colors and I like the balcony in the distant left.

When my feet start getting tired, I remind myself that we are always saying we are going to hike the Camino in Spain. I think the average mile tally for that hike is 12 to 15 miles per day. And that’s with a loaded backpack. So I tell myself that another mile is a great idea. And it always is.

Of course, sitting around outside is great too. We had a couple of local craft beers in the central plaza and listened to the mariachi band.

Then we sought out the carneceria to buy some hamburger meat. We like to shop at the little butcher shops and markets. But San Miguel de Allende has a couple of huge supermarkets. We visited one and grabbed a bottle of wine. It was very upscale with a huge wine, liquor and cigar section as well as a tempting bakery. Danny, you need to come check it out. Market research.

Modern shopping is also available here.

On the way to buy hamburger, I was asked by a group of three nicely-dressed ladies to take their picture. They had picked out a perfect backdrop of a yellow building with bright blue doors. I hope it turned out.

A professional was taking this pic but I also got in on the session.

There are also always a few professional photographers at work. I should have brought my evening wear. Oh wait, I did bring my evening wear. I usually put on green hooded sweater in the evening so I don’t get chilly.

Me in my evening wear. It’s true – shoes make the outfit.
Randall bought the local favorite cigar at this cigar shop. The saleslady assured him that it got great reviews.

Last night, we used the kitchen at our Airbnb to cook burgers. We sat on the terrace here and watched the Superbowl and Randall smoked his highly recommended Mexican cigar. He said it wasn’t the best or the worst. We could say the same for the hamburger meat. We are pretty limited on cookware and the patties turned into crumbled burger.

Below are some nights shots from out after dinner walk two nights ago. The city’s charm is even more impressive at night.
